How to Grow Sunflower Microgreens
Growing medium: Soil or coir peat (difficult to grow with hydroponic growing mediums).
Soaking: Use 1 - 1 1/2 cups of seeds for a standard growing tray, 30 x 35 cm. Soak in cool water for 8 - 12 hours. Sunflower seeds float to the top of the water, which results in uneven soaking. To avoid this, place a small bowl or lid on top of seeds to keep submerged underwater.
Sprouting: Use a sprouting jar or hemp bag to sprout seeds for 24 hours. Keep the seeds moist. The moisture will improve germination.
Growing temperatures: True to its name, sunflower prefers warm, sunny weather. Growth can be slower during cooler months of the year. The ideal growing temperature is 20 - 25 degrees Celsius.
Tray growing: Add 2 - 3 cm of soil or coir peat to your growing tray. Use a tray or small block of wood to flatten the soil. Lightly water soil. Sprinkle seeds over the surface of the soil and ensure that seeds do not overlap. Overcrowding leads to problems with mould or rot. Press the seeds into the soil and lightly water using a spray mist bottle.
Cover your seeds with a growing tray and store in a well ventilated, cool spot. During the germination phase, seeds should not be exposed to light. Water 1 -2 times daily. Keep covered for 4 - 5 days. Once the sunflower shoots slightly raise the top tray, you will know that your plant has taken root and that it is ready to be exposed to sunlight.
Remove top tray and expose the plant to direct sunlight. Water twice daily, and do not overwater. Ready to harvest in 7 - 14 days.
