You can grow almost any type of seed in a jar including broccoli seeds, lentils, chickpeas, mung beans and fenugreek.
1. Choose a wide mouth glass jar with a straining lid, preferably 1 litre or 2 litres. Small jars are unsuitable as the sprouts will not have enough room to grow.
2. Fill your jar one quarter with nuts, pulses, grains or seeds. If you are sprouting broccoli, alfalfa or radish, follow the instructions as you only need to use a tablespoon of seeds.
2. Fill the rest of your jar with cold water.
3. Soak your seeds for 6-12 hours. Six hours is ample soaking time for summer, while twelve hours is suitable for cold weather. Soaking time will also depend on the size of the seed or pulse. For example, 8-12 hours is a good soaking time for mung beans.
4. Drain the water. Rinse your seeds with cold water.
5. Place the jar upside down in a bowl or on your dish rack. Leave tilted on an angle with the sprouting lid in place.
6. Leave your seeds for 8-12 hours. Rinse with cold water and repeat step five.
7. Continue this process until your seeds sprout. Ensure that you do not leave your seeds in the jar too long as this may cause mould. Rinse gently, but thoroughly, with water.
Broccoli seeds: 5-6 days
Wheatgrass: 2-3 days
Chickpeas: 4 days
Peas: 4-5 days
Mung beans: 4-5 days
Lentils: 4-5 days
Alfalfa: 7 days
Spelt: 3 days
